Mim Community Outreach
“Music will save the world.” –Pablo Casals
Mim provides schools with an intimate front seat pass to an interactive performance by renowned musicians. Through this engagement in the community, Mim strives to ignite the creative soul and provide aural landscapes that uplift and inspire each and every child in attendance. Each season prior to the mainstage concerts the musicians play for kids in our community. We have visited El Sistema at Gault, Westlake, Starlight, Twin Lakes, Washington, and Mountain schools, to name a few. What began as performances for elementary school kids has now expanded.
In addition to elementary schools, we also presented performance/seminars to the music students of Cabrillo College, UCSC and Santa Cruz High. We also regularly give free tickets to “Celebrating Youth”, a local organization that trains high school students studying music. Additionally we have performed for the children served at Homeless Services Center.
Thank you to all the teachers and administrators for all the work you do and for taking the extra effort to expose your kids to music!
Mim’s visit to Washington Elementary School in San Jose May 2010 inspired Sharley to start playing the violin. She says, “Seeing that people can play an instrument, like violin, makes me want to do the same thing and accomplish playing the violin. When Rebecca and Tai were here it made me feel like I was able to play the violin and now in middle school, I made it to being an advanced violin player.” Washington Elementary serves a student population that is 95% Latino; 94% of the students qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program and 86% of the students are English Language Learners.
Among other sites, in 2015 an inaugural visit was made by artists with special guest Martin Beaver to perform for youth detained at the Juvenile Detention Center in Felton. Read about our experience on this BLOG or hear from the directors in this VIDEO.
